I create art intended to enhance everyday objects: towels, bags, mugs, shirts, and even prints that adorn your walls. My designs are meant to travel with you, finding their place in your kitchen or beach bag, integrating seamlessly into your daily life. This connection to the ordinary is what truly inspires me.

What Surface Pattern Design Is

Many people may not be familiar with the term "surface pattern designer". If you've ever chosen a piece of clothing because of its print or selected a mug for its aesthetic appeal, you've already engaged with surface pattern design without realizing it. This discipline involves creating repeating patterns and artwork that translate beautifully onto physical products. The design must work at various scales, holding its integrity whether printed on fabric or ceramic. It should feel intentional, whether in a room or on a person, rather than merely interesting in isolation.

Surface pattern design complements fine art by bringing creativity into everyday life. While fine art often has a fixed composition, surface pattern design thrives on versatility, allowing the artwork to transform into functional pieces while maintaining a coherent and captivating aesthetic.

The Decision Behind the Work

My journey toward this focus was intentional. Early on, I decided to create art that integrates into daily life. I'm not interested in art that waits to be discovered; I want to create pieces that find their way into everyday experiences. Whether it's a whimsical frog on a crossbody bag or a botanical pattern on a beach towel, my goal is to make art that resonates beyond the moment of viewing.

I believe that a print you love on your wall is something that greets you each morning, while a pattern on a mug is something you hold dear during your morning coffee. This kind of closeness between a person and a piece of art is something that enriches daily life.

Who This Work Is For

My creations speak to those who decorate their spaces and lives with intention. They don't just fill their homes; they choose items that resonate with them, considering each piece carefully. They appreciate the patterns on a towel, select a bag for its print as much as for its function, and desire art to be a natural part of their everyday lives without making a grand statement.

This work is also for thoughtful gift-givers. Art that lives on functional items is easier to give and receive than a framed print that requires wall space. It meets people where they are in their lives.

Why the Object Matters

Surface design is a unique and enriching form of artistic expression. The challenge of designing for an object enhances the creative process. I must consider how a pattern wraps around a mug handle, how a motif scales from a phone case to a beach towel, and whether a design that shines in bright afternoon light also works in the dim glow of a kitchen at dawn.

These considerations push my work toward a greater degree of thoughtfulness. The art must be generous, giving a part of itself to the object while still holding its own identity.

Final Thoughts

If you've ever been drawn to an object because of its print, unable to articulate why, that attraction is the essence of my work. Surface pattern design succeeds when you stop perceiving the art as just art and instead feel joy in holding the object.
